Counter-Strike started out from humble beginnings as a mod for Half-Life, but it quickly found its place as one of the most played games in the world. At this point, Valve, the creators of Half-Life recognized the mod officially and bought it. As a result, Counter-Strike is its own game now. It has a huge player base and it still receives regular updates. You can play with and against friends and it involves eliminating each other with a pretty impressive guns arsenal. The game is an excellent way to pass the time, due to its accessibility and competitive gameplay.

This particular Counter-Strike version is a bit old, but it is free and you can run it without any problems even on older hardware. Installing the game doesn't take more than a minute and there are no special requirements you have to meet. The best part is that Counter-Strike still works on modern operating systems, despite its age.

The rules of the game is quite simple. There are two teams of human players. One team consists of terrorists and the other of counter-terrorist operatives. The main objective is to eliminate the enemy team, but there may be some secondary objectives, depending on what map you play. In some cases, the terrorists may have hostages, which have to be guarded, or else the counter-terrorists will rescue them and win. In other cases, the terrorists may be able to place a bomb in a key location, at which point the counter-terrorists will need to defuse it before time runs out.

Besides choosing a team, you can also choose your appearance in the game. This doesn't have any effect on how you perform in the game. What does have an effect is what weapons you buy when a match starts. You can browse through several weapons categories in a menu. The game lets you choose between assault rifles, machine guns, SMGs, shotguns and others.

Counter-Strike is played just like any first person shooter. You move and perform other actions using the keyboard and you look around and fire your weapon with the mouse. Your goal is to eliminate the enemy team and to do this, you will, of course, need to point one end of the gun at your enemy and pull the trigger. It should be fairly obvious out of which end of the gun the bullets come out, so you shouldn't have any problems playing the game, unless you're playing it online, against more experienced people.

If you are looking for a properly good and fun game to pass the time, Counter-Strike will keep you buys for hours.

Pros

The game places an impressive selection of weapons at your disposal. The rules of the game are clear and the gameplay is quite easy to master. The best part is that it can be played with other people.

Cons

This particular version is a bit outdated.
